Stefano Boeri Architetti's project, part of the international initiative “Gates of Hope”, creates a real connection between prison and the city in Brescia, placing work at the center as a tool for reintegration.
A THRESHOLD THAT CONNECTS
At Canton Mombello Prison, the ‘Door of Hope’ is not an abstract symbol. It is a practical tool that opens the door to opportunities for work, training and education. Set within the panopticon, one of the doors becomes a digital display that updates in real time the job vacancies, work placements and training courses organised in partnership with local businesses and cooperatives.
Outside, in Piazzale Arnaldo, an identical door opens out onto the city. Here, it does not merely showcase opportunities, but brings the reality of prison life into view: the conditions of detention, the issue of overcrowding, and the daily work of staff, volunteers, businesses and prisoners.
The two doors, though distant, function as a single system. They connect the prison and the city, facilitating a continuous exchange of information, opportunities and awareness.
It is not just an installation.
It is a threshold that opens.
