The bicycle as a school
of citizenship: the project
GenerAzione BiciBrescia
The bicycle is not just a means of transport. It is a way of looking at the city. And learning to live it.
From this idea was born GenerAzione BiciBrescia, a Civic Education project carried out with Galleria della Natura, which focused on students, schools, and urban space. A path designed to promote cycling mobility and help young people understand the value of their daily choices.
The bike thus became a tool to talk about health and well-being, road safety, respect for rules and common spaces, participation, and environmental protection. Through engaging activities and moments of discussion, students observed their travel habits and reflected on how to make Brescia safer, more accessible, and more livable.
Not just spectators, but ambassadors of sustainable mobility, capable of taking what they have learned outside of school and sharing it with peers, families, and the community.
The journey concluded with Blu in Bici, the city event that brought ideas, projects, and experiences developed during the year to the streets, turning the work of the classes into an open and shared moment.
GenerAzione BiciBrescia was an investment in the future. Because educating today means building a more aware, safer, and more sustainable city tomorrow.
LEARN, DO, PARTICIPATE
GenerAzione BiciBrescia involved primary and secondary schools with activities adapted to different ages, combining play, creativity, learning, and direct experience.
In primary schools, girls and boys discovered the benefits of cycling through stories, quizzes, and movement games, learning the first safety rules and reflecting on the value of a city with less traffic and more space for people.
In lower secondary schools, the program focused on autonomy, coexistence among different road users, and knowledge of the city's cycling network. Students also tackled the principles of basic maintenance and imagined safer routes to reach school and other places of daily life.
In upper secondary schools, cycling mobility became a topic to analyze and discuss. Girls and boys worked on environmental data, traffic flows, awareness campaigns, and proposals to improve urban mobility.
Posters, drawings, flags, games, and digital content gave shape to the work done in class. With Blu in Bici, these materials left the classrooms and became tools for participation, meeting, and dialogue with the city.
