In the heart of Brescia, between Largo Formentone and Piazzetta Tito Speri, there’s a narrow little street that looks much like any other. But take just a few steps and you’ll discover a small church that’s a veritable hidden gem.
It’s the Church of San Faustino in Riposo, also known as the Church of Santa Rita, the patron saint of impossible causes.
An intimate, silent place that makes no noise, but leaves its mark.
THE CHURCH OF SANTA RITA: BRESCIA'S HIDDEN TRULLO
From the outside, it seems almost invisible. But you only have to step through the small doorway below the tower of Porta Bruciata, in Via dei Musei, to enter an intimate, understated space redolent of silence and ancient faith.
Inside is a circular-plan church, with about 30 seats. Small, yes. But packed with history and devotion.
There’s the image of Saint Rita, the patron saint of impossible causes. Also, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady, with dozens of ex-votos recording hopes and miracles, and giving thanks.
The walls bear visible signs of time: frescoes recovered during recent restoration work. One absence in particular weighs heavily: the famous Pala della Mercanzia by Vincenzo Foppa is now housed in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo.
But the real eye-catcher is outside, at the back: a unique bell tower in the shape of an inverted pine cone. It seems to have come from a completely different era. Or from a dream.
Built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries, the church houses an altarpiece by Domenico Romani (1743). A Virgin and Child between Saints Faustinus and Jovita that is quintessentially Brescian.
