In the heart of Brescia’s historic centre stands Palazzo Martinengo Cesaresco Novarino, a vibrant space where temporary exhibitions and cultural events take place on the surface, while deep below ground a journey unfolds back in time as far as the Iron Age.
THE PALACE
An elegant 17th-century residence commissioned by Count Cesare IV, today invites visitors to pass through its monumental gateway, step into the inner courtyard—complete with a 16th-century fountain and private chapel—and then continue through the historic rooms until they reach the underground areas. These spaces bear witness to three thousand years of history, spanning prehistoric times, the Roman era and the Middle Ages.
Offering a privileged and fascinating vantage point on the urban stratification that has shaped Brescia’s evolution from its earliest settlements to the present day, Palazzo Martinengo is not just an aristocratic residence or a modern exhibition venue: it is a gateway to the city’s memory, a place where every stone carries a word of a millennia-old story.
