THE CHURCH

The Church of San Clemente di Brescia is a religious building located in the heart of the historical centre, in vicolo San Clemente, a short distance from Piazza del Foro. The interior, characterised by Rodolfo Vantini's elegant architecture, still retains a harmonious and monumental appearance, the result of 19th-century renovations.

San Clemente was built on ancient foundations dating back to the 10th century. In 1471 it was annexed to the Dominican monastery, after which it began a long evolution. First in the 17th century, then in the 19th century, the church was transformed, its earlier Gothic style replaced with the clean, solemn Neoclassicism which still distinguishes it today.

The simple but imposing façade leads to a single nave dominated by light and works of art that are well worth a visit. The high altar, sculpted by Antonio Calegari, is only the beginning.

San Clemente guards veritable treasure: the works of Alessandro Bonvicino, known as Moretto, who is buried here. His canvases, such as "St. Ursula and the Virgins", "The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine" and "The Virgin in Glory", transform the church into a living art gallery. Above his tomb, the marble bust by sculptor Gaetano Matteo Monti pays homage to the master.

Next to him, is another great master: Romanino, with the fresco "Resurrection of Christ between Saints Clement and Teresa".
