Between Via Ugo Foscolo and Via Campo Marte, lies a park that isn’t just a green space, but living memory. This is Campo Marte, today named after Samuele Quilleri, in honour of the partisan, engineer and politician from Brescia who left his mark. But those who walk in the park, between benches, track and play areas, are treading on a century and a half of transformation.

CAMPO MARTE

It all began in 1863, when the Austrian government chose this area for military purposes, leaving Canton Mombello. Since then, Campo Marte has shed its skin many times, becoming a military training ground, then a hippodrome and cycling track, an airfield in during the First World War and a wartime vegetable garden during the Second World War.

In the 1920s, the municipality began to redevelop the area.
A monumental entrance was erected with a double colonnade and a sentence that stands the test of time: “Virescit Robore Virtus”, virtue flourishes with strength.

For decades, the camp remained under the control of the army and was used for training and exercises. Then, after lengthy negotiations, ownership passed to the municipality in 2007.
Since then, it has been an open, much-visited, shared space.

Today, Campo Marte is a go-to space for those who love exercise and the outdoors.
The park has an athletics track, equipped fitness areas, a dedicated dog field, and plenty of green spaces for walking, playing, and simply breathing fresh air.
