Ciampa lives trapped between what he is and what he must appear to be. He defends his honour like a suit of armour, but he is also a prisoner of it. In a Sicily that functions like a puppet theatre, Pirandello dismantles social masks and lays bare the eternal conflict between truth and appearance. The result is a tragic, ironic and cruel comedy, where identity is a necessary fiction and rebellion takes the form of those who no longer accept the game.
