Tower of Ercole

Tower of ErcoleVia Carlo Cattaneo, 29/B - Brescia BS
Torre d’Ercole, or the Tower of Hercules, is an ancient medieval building in the heart of the city which bears witness to Roman and medieval history. 15 metres high, it was built on the remains of Roman buildings and preserves traces of the noble families and lords who shaped its appearance over the centuries.
TOWER
This ancient medieval residence stands at the intersection of the decumanus and the cardo maximus of the ancient Roman city. Probably built in the 12th century by the noble Palazzi family, who resided here, the tower rests on the ruins of Roman buildings.
In 1258, when Ezzelino da Romano conquered the city, the tower underwent some changes at his behest.
Its name seems to recall the proximity of an ancient temple dedicated to Hercules. Fifteen metres high, the tower is built of stone blocks from pre-existing Roman buildings, as evidenced by a slab with an inscription placed transversely on the east side.
