In the heart of the historical centre, among medieval alleys and squares steeped in history, stands the Torre della Pallata.

Standing 32 metres high and solidly built of Botticino limestone and medolo stone, it’s one of the most recognisable symbols of Brescia. Once a bastion. Today, living memory.

THE TOWER

Built in 1254 to protect the Porta di San Giovanni (St John's Gate), it’s the only surviving part of the city’s first medieval walls.

The name? It could perhaps come from palisade, or perhaps from “Pallas Athena”. So, from wood or myth.

Over time its appearance and function have changed. After the siege of 1311, it guarded the Treasure of Monte di Pietà. Then, in the Renaissance, it was given a makeover, incorporating a clock (1461), terracotta battlements, and a turret

In 1597, the western side gained a magnificent addition: the Fountain of the two Rivers, with statues representing the Mella and Garza according to some, or the Garda and Iseo according to others.

However you put it, it’s beauty that flows.

Today, as in the past, the Pallata is a steady presence. Motionless only in appearance. Because it continues to tell the story of Brescia's strength, identity and history.
