A few minutes from the centre, walking up via Panoramica, past the verdant paths of the Ronchi hills, you come across a curious, silent construction: the Bonomini Tomb, which locals have always called “Tomba del Cane”, or “Dog’s Tomb”.

A SEPULCHRE...NEVER USED

The monument was designed in 1860 by architect Rodolfo Vantini to house the remains of Angelo Bonomini and his associate Giuseppe Simoni, both benefactors of the Spedali Civili di Brescia hospital.

But the plan changed: new municipal regulations required burials be restricted to public cemeteries. And so, the grave remained empty.
Today it has the appearance of a small neo-Gothic temple, with a square plan, protruding corners and an aura of mystery that endures.

The name “Dog’s Tomb” has fired the popular imagination for decades. Some say that a faithful dog, possibly belonging to Bonomini, is buried there. Others speak of a young Austrian woman and her four-legged friend. And there are also those who claim the opposite: that there’s no one inside, neither man nor beast, which is precisely why the tomb was thus named.
