Brescia's largest green lung
Almost 1,000 hectares of reclaimed nature.
Parco delle Cave, or Quarry Park, is Brescia's largest green space, a landscape of fields, lakes and walking and cycling paths in the south-east sector of the city. It isn’t just a park: it is real, tangible, visible regeneration.
From scarred land to shared space
In the 1960s, there were gravel and sand quarries here, which had obliterated the agricultural fields in the area.
The idea of returning the area to the city was first floated in 1976, but took over forty years to become reality.
In 2018, the Parco delle Cave was finally created, recognised as a PLIS - Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale (Local Park of Supra-Municipal Interest) and an unprecedented urban and environmental redevelopment project took shape in Brescia.
Four lakes, a new ecosystem
The main attractions of the park are the groundwater lakes, created by the natural filling of the former quarries. Today they’re veritable ecological habitats, where birds, amphibians, fish and wild vegetation coexist.
- Lake Canneto - 36 hectares
- Lake Bose - 33 hectares
- Lake Gerolotto - 56 hectares, with a footbridge and observation points for birdwatching
- Lake Fuserino - opened to the public in 2024, with a cycle path and rowing school
The park offers 15 km of cycle paths, outdoor sports areas, nature observation areas, links between the various neighbourhoods and new perspectives for daily life.
January 2025 saw the inauguration of Casa del Parco, a centre overlooking Lake Gerolotto. It’s a community and cultural centre designed for those who love and visit the park, and those who work to protect it.
The building houses a two-room apartment complete with bathroom, accessible toilets, a multi-purpose room for meetings, gatherings and events, and a space dedicated to environmental groups.
