Astronomical Clock of Piazza Loggia

Astronomical Clock of Piazza LoggiaPiazza della Loggia, 10, 25121 Brescia BS
The astronomical clock in Piazza della Loggia is a masterpiece of the Brescian Renaissance.
THE CLOCK
Built in the 16th century, it combines art and science by showing the motions of the Sun and Moon according to the Ptolemaic model, symbolising the link between time, astronomy and wonder.
It represents a historical and scientific heritage and a fine example of 16th century technology. Its dial is inspired by the Ptolemaic model, with the Earth at the centre of the universe, and reflects the link between astronomy and astrology, then in its heyday. Clocks of this type made it possible to observe the motions of the Sun and Moon in the Zodiac, offering astrological readings and awe-inspiring precision and beauty.
Although they do not have the accuracy of modern astronomical calculations, these instruments are still remarkably reliable. Their construction, based on ingenious mechanical calculations, has withstood centuries of wear and tear and bad weather. Maintenance requires sensitivity and technical expertise: those who look after them develop an almost “empathic” relationship with the mechanism, interpreting its sounds and silences.
