Monument to the victims of the Piazza Loggia massacre

Monument to the victims of the Piazza Loggia massacreVia Milano, 17 - Cimitero Vantiniano - Brescia BS
In the tree-lined heart of the Cimitero Vantiniano cemetery, the Monument to the Fallen in the Partisan Struggle and to the Victims of the Piazza della Loggia Massacre is a precise, measured architectural space that inspires reflection.
THE MONUMENT
The shape is triangular, sharp. The space is sacred, yet accessible, leaving time and place for remembrance.
The two short sides of the triangle accommodate the stairs leading down to the crypt-ossuary. The long side is traversed by a narrow vertical opening, which marks the entrance and leads to two lower horizontal openings, arranged laterally. The masonry blocks never close completely, a vertical crack allows a glimpse of the interior even from the outside. It’s an invitation: looking inside, even for a moment, is already an act of remembrance.
The volume echoes the logic of the orthogonal axes of the Vantiniano Cemetery and reflects the design idea of Ignazio Gardella, the architect who designed it. It’s reminiscent of a square rotated by 45°, as in his other works, from the Vicenza Theatre to the Alfa Romeo Offices, but here everything is pared down to the essential. Every opening, every line, every void serves to say one thing: lest we forget.
A monument that isn’t overbearing, but accompanies and protects.
