Church of Sant’Alessandro

Church of Sant’AlessandroVia Moretto, 75, 25121, Brescia (BS)
The Church of Sant'Alessandro is located in Piazzetta Sant'Alessandro, halfway down Corso Cavour and along the adjacent Via Moretto. Of very ancient origins, it’s traditionally believed to have been founded in the 5th century.
Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous reconstructions and, in contemporary times, major restoration work to repair the severe damage caused by bombing during the Second World War.
Considered a treasure trove of art, the church has housed many valuable works over time, many of which are now kept elsewhere. Among those remaining, the 15th-century Annunciation by Jacopo Bellini stands out for its artistic value and importance.
THE EXTERIOR
The exterior, redesigned in the 18th century by Antonio Donegani, is a tribute to classical architecture: Corinthian columns, a triangular tympanum and a balance of volumes that endows the church with elegance and strength.
The sober but monumental façade leads to a refined interior. The structure features a single nave, without a transept, with eight side chapels framed by a double order of columns and pilaster strips in imitation marble. The barrel vault, the windowed lunettes and the dome above the high altar complete the harmonious and solid design.
