At the end of Corso Magenta, overlooking Piazzale Arnaldo, is a church that has never stopped resisting: Sant'Afra in Sant'Eufemia.

Built in the 15th century and revolutionised in the 17th, it survived the suppressions of 1797 and is still standing today, open and full of life.

The interior houses works that are quintessentially Brescian, by local masters such as Sante Cattaneo, but also a painting by Paolo Veronese and one by Enea Salmeggia, which in 1867 took the place of the famous Moretto altarpiece - now in the Tosio Martinengo art gallery.

And below, in the crypt, the original 15th-century structure is still visible, reminding us that in Brescia, history is never erased. It’s lived.

THE CHURCH

The church’s full name is Sant'Afra in Sant'Eufemia, but today it’s known simply as Sant'Afra.
For centuries it was the urban heart of the Benedictine monastery of Sant'Eufemia della Fonte, a spiritual and educational landmark east of the walls.

It all started with a forced relocation: after the siege of 1438, the monks moved their lives and faith to the Torrelunga area (today Piazzale Arnaldo).
In 1444 they received papal consent to rebuild.

In 1479 the church was ready, with the relics of St Paterius housed in the crypt. Then, the 17th century, everything changed: new forms, a new façade, new balance.

In 1797 the monastery was suppressed, but the church remained standing. It resisted.
It became part of the Goito army barracks, and suffered some losses (including frescoes by Lattanzio Gambara), but held firmly on to its identity.

Today it stands as an imposing but harmonious building with a Baroque marble façade, a single nave and elegant side chapels.
Below, the crypt still retains a 15th century atmosphere.

There’s also a small, intimate side chapel dedicated to the Crucifixion. A corner of silence in the city.
