In the heart of Brescia is one building that needs no introduction: Palazzo della Loggia, or the Loggia Palace. Locals call it simply “La Loggia” and it’s one of the symbols of the city. A masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it’s also and above all a place that’s full of life, which has been home to the city government for over a century. Exactly as was the intention from the beginning.
THE PALACE
The foundation stone was laid in 1492. Then came wars, fires, interruptions. But the Loggia survived it all. Even when, in 1575, a fire destroyed the roof and the room decorated with three paintings by Titian, it never gave up. Some of the greatest architects of the age worked on its construction: Sansovino, Palladio, Vanvitelli. People who left their mark. And indeed, even today, the Loggia still dominates the western side of Piazza della Loggia, with its Botticino marble façade and thirty busts of Roman emperors sculpted by Gasparo Cairano. A real statement of intent.
Over time, the monumental staircase, the Vanvitellian Hall (now used for events and ceremonies), and the lead keel roof from 1914, inspired by the original roof, were added. Each era has left a piece of itself. The result is a building that tells a story over 500 years long, yet has never stopped looking forward.
