THE CHARACTER AND HIS STORY
The monument is dedicated to Niccolò Fontana, known as Tartaglia (Brescia, 1499 - Venice, 1557), a mathematician who made important contributions to the resolution of equations and geometry. Having survived serious injuries sustained during the Sack of Brescia in 1512, Tartaglia transformed his difficulties and limitations into intellectual strength, becoming a leading figure in the Italian scientific Renaissance.
THE WORK AND ITS MEANING
Created by sculptor Luigi Contratti and inaugurated on 10 November 1918, the monument consists of a large marble base on which stands the figure of the mathematician absorbed in his calculations, compass in hand. The work expresses dedication to research, the elegance of scientific thought and Brescia's deep roots in the dialogue between culture and progress.
