THE CHARACTER AND HIS STORY
The monument is dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the undisputed protagonist of the Italian Risorgimento and a symbol of civil commitment and freedom. His figure is linked to the history of Brescia because in June 1859 he entered the city as a liberator from Austrian domination, welcomed with enthusiasm by the people of Brescia.
THE WORK
Created by sculptor Eugenio Maccagnani and inaugurated in 1889, the marble and bronze equestrian monument stands in the centre of Piazzale Garibaldi. The sculpture depicts the general on horseback, with a thoughtful rather than bellicose expression, symbolising committed and thoughtful leadership. The Botticino marble base is embellished with a bronze lion, emblem of valour, and a ship's prow with oars and a garland, celebrating Garibaldi's exploits and his connection with the world.
It is not just a statue: it is a reminder of the freedom, unity and collective participation that have always animated Brescia. Here, the memory of the Risorgimento is integrated with city life and European identity.
