THE PERSON AND HIS HISTORY
The monument is dedicated to Giuseppe Mazzini (Genoa, 1805 – Pisa, 1872), thinker, journalist and patriot who promoted the idea of a united, democratic and republican Italy, founded on civil participation and the freedom of peoples. A leading figure in the Italian Risorgimento, Mazzini profoundly influenced 19th-century European political and cultural debate with his vision of active citizenship and civil engagement.
THE WORK AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
The bust of Giuseppe Mazzini was erected on 25 November 1972 on the initiative of the Mazzinian Association and placed in Piazza Belfiore in Brescia. The work, based on a plaster study from the school of Vincenzo Vela, depicts Mazzini with his characteristic dedication and intense gaze, immortalising his role as the inspiration behind republican and democratic ideas.
It is not just a portrait: it is a reminder of the value of free thought, civic engagement and collective responsibility that contributed to the construction of modern Italy and still characterise Brescia's European identity today.
